Council's attention
has been drawn to the difficulties members have experienced
in completing their rounds when playing late afternoon / early
evening in midweek (Wednesday) competitions.
In an effort to address
the problem, Council has ruled that, with effect from 4th May
and until further notice, play is prohibited to fourballs (including
KO matches) and casual visitors after 2.00 pm on Wednesdays.

At 7pm on Wednesday, 25th May, 2011 Manchester Golf Club will
be holding a New Members evening in the Tattersall Suite at Hopwood.
All categories of new members who have joined Manchester Golf
Club since the start of 2010 are invited to attend with their
sponsors. All categories including Junior, Social, Access, Academy,
Corporate, Five, Six and Seven day members are cordially invited
to this meeting. This is an opportunity to meet Captain, Lady
Captain, Vice Captains and individual members of Manchester Golf
Club Council together with other club officials and members of
the House of Golf.
This evening is a smart casual affair and we would welcome as
many new members and their sponsors to attend. We want to hear
your views on Manchester Golf Club, its admissions policy, how
we do things, can we improve, what is missing, can we learn from
your experiences at other clubs and suchlike. This is an ideal
opportunity for two way communication between new members and
club officials. WE WANT TO LISTEN, LEARN AND IMPROVE THE WAY WE
DO THINGS and we need your help to make this work.

Congratulations to Beth Greenhalgh
(aka Smiler) who obtained her first CONGU handicap of 36, this
is a great achievement because Beth is only 10 years old. Beth
has worked extremely hard on her golf game over the last few months
and all this hard work has paid off.
Well done Beth!

to everyone that took part and gave us something to aspire to!

Why is the Bumblebee so important?
It is reported that Albert Einstein
once said 'If the Bee disappeared off the surface the the globe,
then man would only have 4 years life left. No more bees, no more
pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.'
There has been a 15% decline in
numbers over the last two years and a 70% decline in Bumblebees
over the last 30 years.
What are we doing?
Mark Jones and his team have purchased
bumblebee hives and lodges and each lodge and hive contains a
colony of native UK species Bumblebees.
Each colony contains one queen bee
and many worker bees, working throughout the year from March through
to September. By having hives on site we are helping to increase
the number of bumblebees in the future.
What to do if you see a hive
Please keep away from the hives.
Bumblebees do not swarn and are not aggressive, however, they
can sting.
As always, if stung by a bee or
wasp, you may have a more severe reaction than others. If you
develop a dry cough, start sneezing or have trouble breathing
you should seek medical help immediately - if you are on the golf
course please call Golf Reception for assistance.

The rain showers
did not deter the Manchester Golf Club Junior Section today, it
was the Junior Captain's Drive In and a number of juniors attended
to see our new captain Sophie Powell tee off.
|
 |
 |
Despite torrential rain early on
in the day, the sun came out at Manchester Golf Club today just
in time for Captain Keith Hough's Drive In to mark the start of
the season.
The Captain is pictured being toasted
by the Lady Captain Elaine Clark and Captain Elect Bernard Stone.
The days golf was followed by an
evening celebration in the Tattersall Suite.

Manchester Golf Club's Rachel Connor
has made her first professional win on the Suncoast Series Tour
held at Mission Inn Resort, El Campeon a 6,300 yard Par 73 course
near Mount Dora, Orlando, Florida.
After 18 holes of the 56 hole event
Rachel held a slim lead of just one. Day 2 brought with it horrendous
weather conditions, it was blowing a gale and Rachel was first
out. Grinding out the best score possible was the order of the
day and she was disappointed with her three over par round, until
she saw the scoreboard later in the day - not only was she still
at the top but she had increased her lead.
The weather continued to deteriorate
and eventually the organisers decided that play could not be resumed
- making Rachel the outright winner. Congratulations Rachel!

Junior Organiser Karen Clayton sent
us this report from the final day of the Junior Associate winter
programme.
'It was the final of the Junior
Associate Winter Competition today and the winner on the day was
Lewis Smith.
The overall winner was Beth Greenhalgh
with 71 points and second place was Oliver Mann with 70 points.'
Karen also went on to tell us how
all the associates have made significant improvements on all elements
of their golf game throughout the winter period, some associates
will now be looking to obtain a CONGU handicap during the season.
Congratulations must be passed on
to the Junior Management Team who have worked tirelessly throughout
the winter to ensure that Manchester Golf Club juniors have a
full and complete programme in place, to help them keep their
game in good order during the winter months, learn some new skills
and come out ready to take on the challenges of a new and exciting
season.

On a bright and sunny spring morning
this week a new and very welcome visitor arrived at Hopwood in
the shape of this very handsome cock pheasant.
House of Golf professional Scott
Connor was quick off the mark with his camera and managed to capture
this image of the pheasant trotting towards the putting green.
If you have any images taken at
Hopwood that you would like to share with us please email them
to sales@mangc.co.uk or

Last weekend Manchester Golf Club member Chris Howard showed
his potential as he posted his best tournament result of the year
in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Major Championship at Sugar
Loaf, Florida. In a field of 72 Juniors Chris posted a first round
score of 6 over par to be lying in 15th position. Our members
may bemoan the duration of a medal round on a Saturday but Chris
reported that his first round took 6 hours 20 minutes to complete.
On the Sunday in more diffiult weather conditions Chris played
well to shoot a round of 1 over par that catapulted him to a finshing
position of 5th, just 3 shots behind the winner.
Chris is curently studying and training at the David Leadbetter
IMG in Florida. Club Professionals Brian and Scott Connor (Scott
coached Chris whilst he was in the UK) regularly receive updates
from IMG about Chris's progress, on all accounts Chris is an outstanding
pupil. Congratulations Chris - keep up the good work!

Manchester Golf Club ladies got
off to a flying start this week with a convincing 4-1 win over
Queensbury Golf Club on home soil.
|
|

Jenny Colley, Gill Nugent, Sue Madden
and Elaine Bonn.
|
A group of 8 ladies from Mancheser
Golf Club went on an away trip to Hollins Hall Golf Club last
weekend. Much to everyone's delight Sue Madden recorded a Hole
in One on the 13th, securing 6 points for her team!
Jenny Colley sent us this mesage. 'After wandering around the
edge of the green looking for her ball we told Sue she needed
to look in the hole and lo and behold there it was!
The champagne corks popped later!
The photograph was taken on my
phone by the rather surprised green staff who had continued to
work in the greenside bunker whilst all this excitement was going
on and missed seeing the shot go in. Obviously they weren't aware
of the quality of Manchester Golf Club ladies!'
Congratulations to Sue for her
Hole in One it looks as though it's going to be another exciting
season for Manchester Golf Club ladies!

Today Shaun Hallett and Rob Hughes were crowned as the House
of Golf Winter League Champions 2010 -11. From a field of 74 teams
of two players, taking part in 10 rounds of golf, often in very
difficult playing conditions, Shaun and Rob came in with 170 points
which were accumulated from their best five rounds.
In second place there was a tie on 168 points and so the result
was decided on the best four rounds for these teams. In second
place we have Adam Wright and Dave Radcliffe and in third Jake
Murphy and Lee Wolstenholme.
Fourth place was claimed by the Captain and his playing partner
Steve Daynes who scored 167 points.
The Presentation took place on Saturday 12th March. The images
below show the prize winners and House of Golf club professional
Brian Connor.

Dear Fellow Member,
It is that time of the year when
the Members' Handbooks are being collected and the start of the
2011 golf season is just around the corner.
Fantastic, spring is in the air
and Captain's Drive-In on Saturday, 2nd April is almost here.
The year has started with better weather than twelve months ago,
so here's hoping for a long, warm summer season.
It gives me great pleasure to write
this letter to all MGC members. It is an honour and a privilege
to be your Captain for 2011 and I congratulate Elaine Clark on
her own appointment as Lady Captain.
My congratulations also go to Bernard
Stone and Karen Clayton on their nominations as Vice Captains
for 2011.
I look forward to playing some good
golf over the next twelve months with all three of them.
I would like to thank last year's
Captain and Lady Captain, Harry Malpass and Barbara Whiting for
all of their effort, commitment and achievements whilst in office.
We have an excellent golf course
here at Manchester and I have heard many longstanding members
say they have never seen it so good. Amongst the rewards is our
hosting of three County Championships over the next fifteen months
- the Lancashire Lady Veterans, and the Lancashire Men's and Ladies'
Amateur Championships.
A true testament to the condition
of the course and all the attention it has been given over the
last few years, this is something we as members should be very
proud of. I hope to see many of you in attendance to watch and
support the cream of Lancashire talent compete over our lovely
course.
This is going to be a very important year for a number of reasons.
We have, as a club, a demanding and difficult time ahead, but
I can assure all of our members that each and every one of the
Club's committees is determined to tackle the challenges.
It will not be easy, but with the
support and commitment of the membership I am confident that in
partnership we can overcome these hurdles and move forward.
The Junior Section is flourishing
with many promising young golfers progressing through the ranks.
They are our future champions and they are a credit to this club.
When people talk of Manchester Golf
Club they also think of the House of Golf. The two complement
each other so well and what an asset we members have. I wish all
of them - Brian, Gerry, Scott, Matthew and young Nick - a very
successful year.
The Lady Captain and I have chosen
two Captains' Charities for 2011, the British Heart Foundation
and Springhill Hospice, Rochdale. We hope that you will support
both of these worthy causes whenever you can.
Finally, let me on behalf of Elaine,
Bernard, Karen and Council wish every member a happy, healthy
and successful year.
May the weather be warm, the drives
long and straight, the irons pin point accurate, and may all the
putts drop! What more can we ask for? Good luck everyone.
Best regards
Keith Hough

The Fabric Committee has identified
a number of areas in and around the Clubhouse which need attention
in order to restore them to good condition and/or improve their
appearance.
As some of these tasks (for example,
fence staining) require no particular skill, the Captain invites
other members to join him in volunteering a little of their time
to help smarten the Clubhouse surroundings.
Will interested members please add
their name to the Captain's on the list located on the notice
board or Click Here
to email me and I will add your name to the list.
