Manchester Golf Club's Tom Thorpe
celebrated his 16th birthday on Sunday 24th July and on the same
day he shot 68 gross ( 65 Nett ) in the Junior Championship Final
qualifying round at Hopwood.
Tom's new handicap came out at an
impressive 2.3 but not content with this Tom then played at Mere
Golf and Country Club today where he was competing for the Mere
Junior Trophy.
Playing from the championship tees ( 6882 yds - sss 73 ) Tom then
returned a gross 73 - winning the Mere Trophy and Abu Dhabi Daily
Telegraph Qualifier. This is a fantastic result from Tom who is
coached by House of Golf professional Scott Connor and one that
is sure to impress the County selectors.
Congratulations to Tom on a fantastic
run of form.

As members of Manchester Golf
Club, many of you will be aware that weve had a new Chef
on board in the kitchen since March.
Spencer Connolly came to us from
The Royal Toby, via a short spell at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester.
Spencer had spent 7½ years at the Toby, latterly as Head
Chef of Banqueting, and in his time with parent company Deckers
had done stints at The Crimble, The Peacock Room and Fallen Angels.
All of them quality establishments, but rather different to a
golf club! Although Spencer was born locally (Connollys,
his grandads successful Middleton bakery, may be known to
some of you), he was brought up in the lovely village of Mojacar
in Spain , where his father ran his own restaurant. His fluent
Spanish and love of exotic flavours are a product of those years.
The last three months have
been quite a learning curve, says Spencer. There have
been a lot of new experiences and its taken me a while to
get the kitchen into shape. Ive had a lot of support from
the Committee in obtaining the equipment I felt was needed and
thats put us in a good position for the future. Ive
put fresh routines in place to help with consistency of product
and presentation (still a work in progress!), and Ive changed
some of our suppliers. Adrien joined the team in April as a second
assistant alongside Richard and they are working well together.
|
|
|
Ive been giving a lot
of thought to the snack menu over the last three months, weighing
up what sells, what doesnt, and how we can change it to
be more efficient whilst still meeting the members expectations.
There have been quite a number of dishes which just didnt
sell, meaning we were carrying stock which often went to waste,
and in my view there wasnt enough emphasis on made to order
meals. I think we should be offering freshly prepared, home made
food where we can - thats what motivates me as a chef, quality
with a twist!
Hopefully, members will see
this in the new snack menu, even though its quite a bit
smaller. There are plenty of old favourites on there, but a few
new ones too, and I plan to change it around regularly to suit
the season. It will always be supplemented by the Daily
Specials board - the ladies, for instance, have a particular
liking for jacket potatoes, so these will be a regular on Tuesdays.
I have a few new ideas up my sleeve and I plan to try these out
as Specials - I hope the members will be willing to give them
a go. Members will also see more realistic pricing with this menu,
as the old one had failed to reflect the inflation weve
seen with a lot of foodstuffs as well as the rise in VAT. Im
confident though that members will still think they are getting
good value, especially with the card discount.
The new snack menu (copy attached)
has now been launched. We hope those of you who are regular diners
at the Club will continue to give your support to Spencer and
his team. If any of you have fallen out of the habit (or have
never been in it!), please try our service again. We are confident
you will not be disappointed.

Manchester Golf Club junior member
Tom Thorpe has been invited to take part in trials at Formby Hall
on 29th June 2011 to become part of the England Futures Programme.
Lancashire officials asked Tom to
play as a marker in the final 36 holes of the Lancashire Amateur
Championship with Matthew Cox (Royal Birkdale). It was Tom's first
time off the Blue Tees and by all accounts he really enjoyed it
as in his second round he shot his lowest score at the club -
gross 72. The Lancashire selectors could not fail to be impressed
with this gutsy performance.
As a result Tom further reduced
his handicap to 3.9 and then followed this up by shooting gross
75 in the midweek competition at Hopwood. Tom is now down to to
3.8.
Tom is coached by Manchester's PGA
Professional Scott Connor. This is what Scott had to say - 'Tom
has worked hard over the last few years to make sure that he has
a solid, repeatable swing that will hold up under pressure and
enable him to win golf tournaments. He has also worked hard at
his short game and his fitness. Tom deserves a place on the England
Futures Programme and I am confident that he will achieve this
goal. Congratulations Tom!'

Manchester Golf Club are celebrating
after receiving a number of awards in their quest to become an
officially recognised high quality, welcoming, club for young
golfers and also securing the London 2012 Inspire Mark for a celebratory
event they are hosting next year.
The awards include GolfMark, Clubmark
and Link4Life's Springboard Bronze, Silver and Gold standards.
GolfMark is a national scheme that identifies and recognises junior
and beginner friendly golf facilities. This in turn has given
them recognition by Sport England as a Clubmark facility. Both
marks are a national standard for quality sports clubs recognised
across the country and Springboard is a scheme that gives local
accreditation within the borough of Rochdale. The club was assessed
on its coaching and playing opportunities, its environment, Child
Protection and Duty of Care policies. Club Captain Keith Hough
speaking on behalf of the Club is delighted with the award. "We
have been working extremely hard over the last few months, behind
the scenes, to put in place various policies and procedures to
ensure we are serving our young golfers well. We are actively
encouraging and trying to attract young members to build a stronger
future for the club. We have been addressing issues like equity
and child protection which we feel give parents confidence when
choosing a golf club for their children and also developing our
coaching team and volunteers".
He went on to say "The Club
would particularly like to thank Link4Life for all their assistance
in helping us achieve this accreditation, without this support
our task would have been a lot harder. Link4Life through their
Club Development Programme helps clubs achieve the recognition".
Manchester Golf Club along with Castlehawk Golf Club are the only
golf clubs in the Borough with the award.
In addition the club's project;
Search for a Gold Star has been awarded the Inspire Mark, the
badge of the Inspire programme which recongises projects and events
inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Search
for a Gold Star will take place in August 2012 in conjunction
with the club's centenary celebrations. The Event was successful
in gaining the Inspire Mark meeting the criteria set by the London
Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and the International
Olympic Committee (IOC).
The inspired Search for a Gold Star
project taking place next year in partnership with Link4Life and
Manchester Golf Club will include a one day golfing experience
to showcase the sport of golf to young people who have never given
it a try and would like too. It will be an excellent opportunity
to see what the sport of golf is all about and to learn about
the values, traditions and history of this wonderful sport.
With the introduction of golf into the 2016 Olympic Games in Argentina
this first time visit may INSPIRE our young people to pursue a
golfing career into future Olympiads and gold medal glory! We
can only hope!
Further information about the event
will be available soon but in the meantime if we have any young
golfers out their who want to know about the Club or becoming
a member they can contact Keith Hough 0161 643 3202 for further
details.

You will have gathered by now that
I always manage to have an eventful time whenever I am on tour
- this last week was no exception!
Today I made my first top ten finish
in the LPGA Futures Tour Ladies Titan Tire Challenge at the 6445
yard Par 72 Hunter's Ridge Golf Course in Iowa. The field was
made up of 140 professionals from around the globe and I finished
in a tie for 8th position. So at this moment I am a very happy
girl!
During the event the weather conditions
were testing, to say the least, as strong winds and rain delays
were the pattern for the weekend and I was really pleased with
how my game held up.
The lead up to the event was a marathon
for me as I began the week with a 23 hour car journey from Sarasota
to Iowa with my friend and fellow player Jodie Ewart. I just managed
to walk the Hunter's Ridge course before catching a flight to
play in a 36 hole Pro-Am in Atlantic City for Play Golf Designs.
As you can imagine, I was slightly
concerned when my clubs were 'mislaid' during flight but thankfully
they did arrive in time for the first event. As soon as the Pro-Am
finished I then caught a flight back to Iowa ready for my tee
time the following morning of 11.00am. The first part of the marathon
was complete.
However I started to wonder whether
the laws of aviation were conspiring against me when once again
my golf clubs didn't arrive safely with me in Iowa and I had a
tense few hour wait to see whether I would in fact have any clubs
to play with - thankfully they did arrive just in time to play
in the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge and the rest, as they say,
is history. What a week!
By the time you read this I will
probably be in Mason, Ohio preparing for the LPGA Futures Tour
Teva Championship which runs from June 10th - June 12th. Wish
me luck!
Rachel
Jane, Kevan, Nick and Johnnie Howard travelled thousands of miles
across the Atlantic to see their son Chris receive his trophy
for winning the prestigious IMG Matchplay Trophy and they were
not disappointed......

Lancashire Amateur
Championship 2011
Dear Steve,
Just a short note to say thank you to Manchester Golf Club officials
for hosting a very successful championship last weekend and thank
you for your own considerable help during the many weeks preparation
and for your kind attention during the event.
Special thanks must
go to all the staff at Manchester. They were extremely friendly
and eager to please which helped enormously with the success of
the event. It is unfair to select specific individuals but your
professional, Brian, did his utmost to ensure that we were catered
for as did Steve and his clubhouse staff who also supplied an
excellent meal for the championship dinner.
The course was in
superb condition so, special thanks to your Head Greenkeeper Mark
Jones.
You have a great
Club - it was a pleasure for us to be with you.
Best wishes to you
and the Club
Kind regards
Derek Jones
(Championship Chairman)

Manchester Golf Club Lady Vice Captain,
Karen Clayton won the Lancashire Ladies Flight 2 Plate at the
recent Lancashire Championship which was held at Ormskirk Golf
Club. Karen overcame a number of highly ranked competitors on
her way to this victory and put on a great display in the final
when she beat Jane McGregor 5 & 3.
This result is all the more impressive
because Karen plays a key role in the Junior Management Team at
Manchester Golf Club and gives a great deal of her time to encourage
up and coming juniors at the Club. When most other competitors
in the Championship were off playing their own practice rounds
at Ormskirk, Karen was down the road at Formby Hall Golf Club
taking the young Associates for a day out. Now that's dedication!
Congratulations Karen on a fantastic
result!

Despite being down in all seven
matches after seven holes the Manchester Golf Club Dunham Forest
Team pulled off a great win 4-3 at Dunham Forest this week. The
weather conditions were tough and it went down to the wire with
the final match deciding the winning team.
The Manchester Golf Club Team will
be hoping for a home draw in the next round.

Due to injury Manchester Golf Club
member Richard Powell hasn't been able to take full advantage
of his membership at the club for some time now. So rather than
'cleaning up' on the golf course Richard decided to clean up around
the clubhouse.
Last week, armed with his trusty
Kaarcher, Richard spent a day or so cleaning the patio and the
pathways from the Professional Shop through to the clubhouse and
what an amazing job he has done.
Everyone at Manchester Golf Club
would like to extend their appreciation to Richard and the team
of volunteers who are helping to make the clubhouse and surrounding
areas look even better.

Daniel Stone & Edwin Thompson
have been flying the Manchester Golf Club flag away from home
as they won the prestigious 'Founders Day Trophy' presented by
the Society of Manchester & District Golf Captains at Romiley
Golf Club on Wednesday 11th May 2011.
According to Mr Stone the day didn't
begin well as they came off the first green with just one point
but a Hole in One at the second from Mr Stone more than levelled
the score and they then romped home to become winners by two with
42 points.
Mr Stone was Captain of Manchester
Golf Club in 1985 and is the current Treasurer and Mr Thompson
was Captain in 1987. Congratulations to both on a fantastic result!

the top 64 qualified for the Matchplay knockout stage.
Over an intense 4 days Chris
had to encounter a number of tough games to eventually reach the
final where he played one of his closest friends, Gonzalo who
plays off a handicap of +4 in Spain.
Playing off level handicaps
Chris had a ding dong battle throughout. He was 1 down with 3
to play but then managed to dig out a victory by winning the 16th
and 17th and then holing a 20 feet putt for birdie on the last
to win the game 1 up. Chris is very appreciative of the work House
of Golf Professional Scott Connor has performed with him over
the last few years.
And what do you think the prize
was for winning this event? A trip to California to play at the
Torrey Pines Golf Course and to get a fitting for a new set of
Callaway golf clubs! Kevan has already put his name down to caddy!
Congratulations to Chris on
a fantastic achievement!

Well that was an interesting week!
Over the last few days I have been playing in the Suncoast Series
event at Stoneybrook East in Orlando, Florida.
The event began well with a steady
practice round and I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of my
dad, Brian from the UK who was travelling over to caddy for me
in the Suncoast event and the qualifier for the US Open next week.
I was pleased to see that I was
playing with Maria Hjort who is currently lying 6th on the LPGA
money list - I've played with Maria before, enjoy her company
and like to pitch myself against such a great player.
My first round of one under par
71 was steady and I was lying in 4th place after the first day.
Dad was pleased with my game so I was feeling good and ready for
round two. During the night, however, he started to feel really
ill and we realised that the temperature (which was in excess
of 90 degrees) had taken its toll on him. Man down - but on this
occasion even more importantly caddy down!
In the second round I shot 6 under
par 66 which took me into a slim lead for the tournament going
into the final round. Unfortunately my dad still wasn't up to
facing the heat and so I headed off to the golf course on my own
having administered copious amounts of Gatorade, paracetamol and
TLC!
In the final round I played with
Maria again and also with another LPGA player Lori Kane. Maria
had a fantastic round of 65 and I shot 69 - so when we came in
off the course we were tied for the lead on 10 under par.
It was time to go down the first
extra hole and play my first playoff as a professional - the atmosphere
was fantastic. Maria showed her experience and continued on her
fine form of the day by making birdie to my par - I was gutted
not to win but then I know that this is just part of the journey
- you have to learn to lose well in order to be able to win well!
I hope that everyone is enjoying
the course at Hopwood this year I believe that it is in fantastic
condition!
My best wishes to you all - Rachel

The Lancashire Ladies
Veterans have a new Champion - Chris Stokes from Clitheroe Golf
Club! Chris led the qualifiers at Manchester Golf Club on the
first day of the Championship with a fantastic 76 gross in which
she played great golf and showed that she had the pace of the
greens, which was to prove crucial in the matchplay stages of
the Championship.
Chris was in the
top half of the draw and encountered some stiff opposition from
Fiona Anderson (Formby Ladies) in the quarter finals and Ann
Lowe (Royal Birkdale) in the semi-finals, before beating her
best friend and Manchester's own Sue Warrington on the 18th
in the final.
Special praise has
to be given to Sue Warrington as this is her second successive
year in the final - she was the winner in 2010. Manchester Golf
Club is very proud of this achievement - well done Sue and congratulations
to Chris!.
