It is with great sadness that we
write to inform Manchester Golf Club members that today, Past
Lady Captain, Maureen Nicholls has lost her brave fight against
cancer.
Our thoughts and condolences are
with Graham and his family.
If anyone would like to make a donation
to the charity that was closest to Maureen's heart a collection
point has been set up for 'Link for Pink' in the main office.
Maureen is pictured at the Captain's
Final enjoying a joke with Past Captain, Graham Arnall. Maureen
will be sadly missed by us all.

Due to unforeseen circumstances
Jason McCann is unable to perform at Manchester Golf Club on New
Year's Eve. Social Committee Chairman, John Collinson is confident
that despite this news the evening will still be a huge success.
Jason is replaced by Sass and Brass who have performed at our
Club in the past and were a huge success.

Assistance Required for 2011
and beyond
The MGC Junior section is growing at a very quick rate and as
such 2011 is going to be a very busy year for our junior golfers
with two of the Junior Management Team taking up official club
positions within MGC. Therefore we are asking if any member wishes
to join the Junior Management Team as one of our Junior Organisers
to help out with the Junior section. An extra pair of hands would
not go amiss during a busy junior timetable in 2011, it is a very
rewarding position to be involved in the development of our fine,
young junior golfers at Manchester. If any member wishes to join
the Junior Management Team please make themselves known to any
of the Junior Management Team or the MGC General Manager Stephen
Armstead. Thank you.

Congratulations to
Mark Jones and his team for their nomination for the final of
the Golf Environment Awards 2010. According to the report Mark
and his team have 'Instigated an ongoing programme of tree removal,
heathland restoration and grassland management that has gone
a considerable way towards recreating the open heathland characteristic
of old.'
This is something
that we call all be very proud of at a time when environmental
issues are very much to the fore in everything that we do. Well
done!

The Manchester Golf Club Junior Presentation 2010
Manchester Golf Club celebrated the 2010 Junior Presentation on
Sunday 24th October, after the annual mixed Texas Scramble. The
Texas Scramble was won by Kev and Nick Howard, Tracy Capal and
Chris Morrison followed very closely by Mr Captain Harry Malpass,
Lady Vice Captain Elaine Clark, Junior Captain Chris Best and
Nick Connor. This fun event where junior and associate junior
golfers play with gents and ladies members was played on a very
cold, crisp but sunny day and all competitors then joined up with
extended family members to celebrate the Junior Presentation Awards
Ceremony in the Tattersall suite.
This was undoubtedly a family affair including mothers. fathers,
grandparents, brothers and sisters who all helped to celebrate
the achievements of our junior members in 2010. In total 31 trophies
were awarded along with prize winning vouchers. These were presented
to Junior and Associate Junior golfers ranging in age from 9 years
through to 18+ years - the range of prizes was a testament to
the extensive competition schedule that is organised for the juniors
by the Junior Section.
The trophy table was magnificent with the trophies laid out for
everyone to see. Each junior winner was called up to accept their
trophies/winnings from Mr Captain Harry Malpass, Lady Vice Captain
Elaine Clark and Junior Captain Chris Best and afterwards each
junior winner spoke a few words to those assembled. They were
a credit to the Club.
There were a lot of proud parents as each junior came forward
to accept their awards. The event was rounded off with a hot buffet
and a raffle which raised in excess of £287 for the Manchester
Golf Club Junior account, a tremendous sum of money.
All those present thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful occasion.
Roll on Summer 2011 !

Apart from a very small portion
of the Equality Act 2010, this legislation has now been signed
off by the Home Secretary Teresa May on 1st October, 2010 and
the section of the Act covering private member's club is now active
and on the statute books.
The MGC working party looking into this legislation and how it
might impact on the club's working practices/policies have completed
their deliberations. A full report has been compiled for MGC Council
when it nexts meets on Monday 1st November for their full consideration.
The working party has discussed many topics over the last four
months but the main areas of concern highlighted in the report
are membership categories; competition golf/calendar within MGC;
Equal Opportunities policy; the office of Captain; membership
recruitment; MGC committees; access to club facilities; Ladies/Seniors
sections; complaints procedures and Disability Discrimination
Act 1995.
If any member needs further assistance in this matter please speak
with any members of the working party who will be happy to help.

This weekend Manchester Golf Club's
Chris Howard, who is currently training and studying at the IMG
Academy in Bradenton Florida, recovered well in his first event
in America to finish 7th in his first major tournament.
Kev Howard sent us through the following
update. 'Chris had a shocking start on Saturday when he tripled
bogeyed his first hole and was 7 over par after 7 holes but he
recovered well to finish 7 over par for the day.
On Sunday he had a good round
and shot 3 under par to finish 4 over in total. His round on Sunday
was the lowest of the day so I'm told he'll get some sort of award.'
Chris has received 2,200 points
in the Jim McClean boys 16-18 age group and we are sure that this
is just the start of a very successful season for Chris. Congratulations
from everyone back home!

On a bright and sunny, autumn morning Beryl Marshall arrived
at Manchester Golf Club and called into the Pro Shop, as she always
does, to pick up the key for her buggy. But there was a surprise
in store for her today as the Manchester Golf Club ladies had
got to the buggy before her and had decorated Beryl's buggy for
the day with garlands and ribbons to help celebrate her 80th birthday.
When Beryl came in from the course later in the day we were politely
informed that she had played 'rubbish' but there were more surprises
in store as the ladies also presented Beryl with a very nice birthday
cake.
Happy Birthday Beryl - Many Happy Returns!

Sue Warrington topped off a fantastic season with yet another
win in the Nahum Cup which was held at Manchester Golf Club on
Monday 27th September.
Sue shot gross 75 off a handicap of 5 to give her an unbeatable
nett 70. The Lady Captain, Captain and other competitors were
on hand to congratulate Sue when she received her prize. Well
done Sue!

Paul Williamson, a member at Hopwood
for just four years and winner of the 2nd qualifying round back
in May, played some magnificent golf in the most testing conditions
to win the much coveted Captain's Prize over the weekend of 28th
& 29th August.
Paul scored a solid net 72 off his
handicap of six on Saturday to lie just three shots behind front
runners Brian Jackson and Paul Schofield. On a day of frequent
squally showers and blustery wind, the outstanding round came
once again from +1 handicapper Roger Smithies, who finished with
a row of four threes to post a remarkable net 70 (gross 69).
The greens staff worked long and
hard to overcome a prolonged deluge early Sunday and return the
course to its stunning day one condition. The rain soon gave way
to gale force winds from the north and most of those who had made
the cut toiled once more against the elements. Not so Paul, who
carded an early 70 and had the luxury of seeing all his challengers
fall away in the brutal conditions. Roger's net 75 was good enough
to secure the runner-up spot and 3rd place with an aggregate 148
went to two times qualifying round winner David Prescott.
Paul was warmly applauded by a strong
turnout of members and guests when receiving the Prize later that
evening from Captain Harry Malpass.

.......... And a great evening was
had by all!

|
|
At the beginning of September Karen
Clayton and Tracy Capal will be heading off to Gainsborough Golf
Club to play in the Final of the Ping Fourball Betterball Competition.
Tracy and Karen qualified to play in the final back in July when
they followed the competitors playing in the Hulbert Trophy -
despite playing on a course that was set up to test some of the
best golfers in the region, they managed to amass 44 points that
day!
Good luck to them both as they fly
the flag once again for Manchester Golf Club!

The Manchester Golf Club working party has met a third time to
discuss the Equality Act 2010 and its impact of the working practices/procedures
of Manchester Golf Club. All golf clubs have received advice from
the golfing authorities very recently which indicates that the
legislation will come into effect on 1st October, 2010 and therefore
it is very important that the working parties report and recommendations
to Manchester Golf Club Council are completed and submitted as
soon as possible.
Many members may have many questions regarding this new legislation
and how it will impact on the club and their membership. With
this in mind we would ask all members to take a few minutes to
read the EGU/EWGA advice document which golf clubs have received,
it is a simple, straight forward document in the form of recently
submitted questions/answers to the authorities covering the current
legislation. We hope that it may answer some if not all of your
questions and set the record straight showing members exactly
what the working party has to achieve to ensure Manchester Golf
Club is not found wanting under this legislation.
All Manchester Golf Club members, employees, visitors and guests
have a part to play in ensuring that the Club adopts working practices/procedures
that will not leave the Club open to civil litigation.
All members of the working party are striving towards this end
goal and if any Manchester Golf Club member wishes to offer an
opinion, ask a question or make their representations known to
the club, please speak/approach one of the members of the working
party who will will listen to what they have to say.
It is hoped that the working parties report/recommendations will
be presented to Manchester Golf Club Council by the end of September,
2010.
Keith Hough.

Elaine Clark, Karen Clayton
and Jennifer Fallows competed in the Strathtyrum Trophy held at
St Andrews from 9 13 August 2010 There were two qualifying
rounds and the top 32 made the cut for the scratch matchplay knockout
stages from a field of 102 players, the next 16 players progressed
to the handicap knockout stages.
All three ladies easily made
the cut for the scratch knockout stages and also won their first
round matches. Jennifer narrowly lost her 2nd round match 2&1
whilst Elaine won her 2nd round match 6&5 and Karen defeated
last years overall winner 2up. In the quarter final stage,
Elaine lost her match 2&1 and Karen lost on the 19th
So another good result
for Manchester

Manchester's Chris Howard showed
that he has developed into a player to be reckoned with this week
when he steadily worked his way through a field of quality players
in the St Andrews Links Boys Championship. Chris shot a 2 under
par 68 in the qualifying round of strokeplay to find himself in
a tie for second place, just one shot behind the lead.
Chris then went on to play in the
matchplay rounds:
First Round Christopher Howard (Manchester)
bt Blair Scott (Hamilton) 3 and 1
Quarter Finals Christopher Howard
(Manchester) bt Jamie Savage (Cawder) at 21st
Semi-Final Thomas Rowland (Prudhoe)
bt Christopher Howard (Manchester) 2 and 1
Thomas Rowland was the eventual
winner of the tournament winning his final game 4 & 3.
This is a fantastic achievement
for Chris, who at the end of August, will be leaving Manchester
to take up his place at the David Leadbetter IMG Academy in Bradenton,
Florida. Congratulations Chris!
