Today we raised £440 for the

A very big thank you goes to all those juniors, parents and members
that helped out.
We will put the money to good use.

On Thursday 27th May, Manchester
Golf Club member Jennifer Shaw played in the Barceló Corporate
Golf Day and as luck would have it was a member of the winning
team. The team consisted of Ian Morris, Managing Director of Mitsubishi
Materials, Simon Allsebrook, Divisional General Manager of TNT
UK Limited and Wayne Topley GM of Barceló Hinckley Island
Hotel.
According to Jennifer the day was
fantastic from start to finish and to top it off, Jennifer's team
members each won a three night break at one of Barcelos
prized Spanish Resorts, Barceló Montecastillo Hotel and
Golf Resort, including flights, for 2 people.
Jennifer and her fiance Stephen
plan to use this special prize for their honeymoon later in the
year. Congratulations Jennifer!.

MGC Junior golfer Sam Greenhalgh
shot a net 70 in blustery and cold conditions at Blackley GC on
8th May, 2010 to win the Challenge Trophy. Since joining MGC in
the last six months Sam's golf game has gone from strength to
strength, starting with a handicap of 23 he now plays of 19, a
reduction of 4 shots in a very short time period. His sister Beth
( 8 yrs ) has had her own success within the Associate Juniors.
Both are very welcome additions to MGC and there will be many
more successes in the future.
MGC Juniors will take on a
team of juniors from Brookdale GC at 2pm on Thursday, 22nd July,
2010 at Hopwood. This friendly match is one of a number organised
for all juniors to gain matchplay experience against fellow junior
golfers. Come along and watch our future champions tee off. All
support is very welcome

Last week Hopwood teenager Andy
Davis missed out on a tie for the Lancashire U18 title by one
shot. The Championship was held at Preston Golf Club and today
Andy was kicking himself for three putting on the last green.
The event was won by Henry Tomlinson
of Royal Lytham but Andy had the Best Gross of the morning round
and indeed of the championship. Andy's 2 under par round of 69
means that he will be the Lancashire qualifier for the Daily Telegraph
Junior Championship which will be held later in the year.
Andy isn't one for blowing his own
trumpet so we will have to keep our eye on what he is doing for
the rest of this season undoubtedly Andy is one to watch for the
future.
Thank you to Terry Horrocks of Lancashire
County for providing this information.

Message from Brian Connor (Professional)
This week I am very pleased to announce
that a new member of staff will be joining us at House of Golf.
Michele Thomson from Ellon in Scotland will be joining the team
sometime this week so if you're visiting the shop and see a new
face please introduce yourself to Michele. To give you a little
bit of background on Michele she was a member of the 2008 Curtis
Cup Team, winner of the Scottish Amateur Championship in 2008
and represented Scotland on numerous occasions during an impressive
amateur career.
Michele turned professional after
the Curtis Cup in 2008 but decided to take a break from playing
professional golf following a personal bereavement. As a family
we have known Michele for a number of years, she is great fun,
very approachable, hard working and a fantastic golfer, we are
very proud to have Michele on board and know that she will enhance
the staff that we already have in place.
Michele's remit is to improve the
services that we offer to junior golfers at the Club and in the
surrounding area. She will also be working with House of Golf
professional Scott Connor to provide ladies group coaching and
some mixed classes, so if you know of a lady or couple that you
feel might like to get into golf or would like some improvement
sessions please contact Golf Reception on 0161 655 3668 for more
details. Michele will be available to take lessons almost immediately
please join me in wishing her the very best of luck in her new
position.
Regards - Brian

A very proud John Bodgers emailed
yesterday to let the Hopwood Times know that Manchester's Denise
Bodgers has made it through to the final of the Lexus Open Challenge
at ST ANDREWS.
Denise is part of the Bolton team
and yesterday they came in with a team score of 73 pts at Royal
Lytham to secure a coveted place in the final.
On 10th June Denise will be joining
the rest of her team to play a pratice round on the Torrance Course,
this will then be followed by a golf cliinc with Mike O' Meara.
The team will play the final
on the 11th June on THE OLD COURSE which will be followed by dinner
in the prestigious R & A Clubhouse.
According to John they will
then 'leave with a headache' on the 12th June! No prizes for guessing
who will be caddying then. GOOD LUCK DENISE!

Manchester's Anne Sharman is to become Captain of the Lancashire
County Veteran Ladies' Golf Association in 2011. To coincide with
this honour Manchester Golf Club is to play host to a number 'Vets'
events in Anne's year of captaincy, these will include two matches
against Yorkshire and Cumbria and from 3rd-5th May 2011 the Lancashire
Veteran's Championship. This will be a keenly contested competition
with at least 60 players taking part - Sue Warrington of Manchester
(pictured below) will be defending her title on home soil.
Congratulations to Anne!
|
 |
 |
Manchester Golf Club member Sue
Warrington won the LCVLGA Championship at Preston Golf Club on
Friday 7th May. Sue was definitely on form as she was second leading
qualifier with a gross score of 76 and she progressed steadily
in the matchplay rounds throughout the week.
In the Semi Finals Sue beat Chris
Stokes from Clitheroe, whilst Anne Baines from Royal Birkdale
beat Lynn Truelove from Crompton & Royton Golf Club. In the
final Sue and Anne played some great golf but Sue had the upper
hand and was dormy 2 going down 17. Anne put her second shot into
the river, had to take a drop, but then put her ball back in the
river and that was the end of the game.
This is a fantastic result
for Sue and Manchester Golf Club is proud to have a Lancashire
Champion as a member of the club.
Manchester was also represented
by Jennifer Fallows
who came in 9th position in the qualifying round. Jennifer then
played Anne Baines in the first round of matchplay eventually
losing on the 18th hole.

a fantastic shot on the final hole by Pete Salmon!

Jennifer Fallows & Elaine Clark
won the Northern Foursomes today at Pontefract Golf Club. They
started by winning their first round match on the 19th and then
in the second round knocked out Sue Warrington (Manchester) &
Chris Stokes (Clitheroe) also on the 19th hole. In the quarter
finals they went on to beat another Lancashire pair Chris Appleby
and Linda Dorning (Lancashire Veterans Captain) from Preston golf
Club 5 & 4.
In the semi final they played against
two strong, young players from Yorkshire who were both 2 handicappers
and won 2 &1.
The final was also played against
a young pair from Yorkshire, Megan Lockett and Holly Morgan. Elaine
& Jennifer had to give 8 shots but they won a great battle
with the youngsters, eventually winning the match on the seventeenth
2 and 1.
Jennifer said 'I think the touch
of experience that Elaine and I had managed to hold the day for
us.'
Jennifer was a late stand in for
Manchester Golf Club member Karen Clayton who had hoped to defend
the title that Elaine and her won in 2009 but Karen was unable
to play due to family bereavement.
This
is the third time that Elaine has won this event and each time
with a different playing partner. First with Kathryn Fallows,
then last year with Karen and now this year with Jennifer. This
is a fantastic achievement!
Congratulations to Jennifer
and Elaine from everyone at Manchester Golf Club.

The Lady Captain of Manchester Golf
Club for 2010, Barbara Whiting and the Junior Captain, Christian
Best held their Drive-Ins at the Club on Sunday 28th March 2010.
In the morning a great crowd gathered
to wish Barbara a very successful year as Lady Captain and this
was closely followed by Christian and members of the Junior Section
in the afternoon. Christian is pictured below driving off.
It was a very cold but dry day.
Sue Warrington came in as winner of the ladies competition and
Chris Howard was winner of the juniors. Let's hope that this is
just the start of a very good year for both sections.

Members of Manchester
Golf Club and House of Golf customers gathered together on Sunday
21st March to bid a fond farewell to Stan Whitehead who has been
a member of the golf club for some 36 years and manager of the
House of Golf professional shop for 22 of those.
Stan has been a well
respected and knowledgeable member of the club who has contributed
his skills to the club on committees for a number of years. It
was an emotional afternoon and there was barely a dry eye in the
house when Stan was presented with life membership of the club
in recognition of his work.
Stan was also very
well known in the golf industry for his skills as a first rate
club fitter with House of Golf. Stan's work was ackowledged by
Ping Golf Equipment who sent him a Gold Ping Putter especially
made for him at the Ping factory in Arizona. These putters are
usually reserved for major tournament winners and so this was
a fine accolade indeed!
Those that know Stan
well will be aware that Stan has purchased a new home in Harrogate
with wife Sue and that they are both looking forward to blissful
retirement over there.
Stan will be sadly
missed at the golf club but we all wish him and Sue the very best
of health and happiness.
The winners of the
House of Golf Winter League 2010 were presented with their prizes
by Stan Whitehead who as House of Golf Shop Manager started the
Winter League some years ago.
M Flanagan & J
Richardson won the League with 171 points and in their speech
thanked the greenkeepers for presenting the golf course throughout
the winter months so that the membership could play in this very
popular event.
