All golf courses and driving ranges in England are permitted to re-open from Wednesday 2 December 2020 although different rules apply to different Tiers. Manchester Golf Club is open from this date providing that everyone follows the Play Safe, Stay Safe and Tiering Guidelines which are available below.
Members will appreciate that with the need to furlough some employees of the club to save costs, it is not possible to provide all services in the usual way. We appreciate member support during this time along with the understanding that there are many demands on the time of our team and the volunteers in the council and committees.
It is not possible to answer member questions individually and we instead ask that these frequently asked questions are checked in the first instance. Where your individual questions are not answered, they can be submitted here. In line with Government Guidelines everyone must comply with the following:
Updated 27/11: Do members have to follow social distancing procedures?
Yes, members are required to:
- Follow The Club’s Social Distancing and Competition guidelines
- Read and comply with notices in and around the clubhouse and course
- Follow wider Government guidelines published on the gov.uk website
- Follow specific Government guidelines for local restrictions – both in relation to their home address and the location of the club. The guidelines are available here.
Updated 27/11: Which local restrictions – such as those announced for Oldham on 22/8 – apply to members and the club?
For the safety of everyone, it is essential that all members, visitors, employees and associates comply with local restrictions affecting the club and their home address. Local restrictions change frequently and anyone travelling to The Manchester Golf must check and comply with local guidelines set-out by the Government here along with local guidelines such as those published for Oldham.
The nature of local restrictions may mean that the home address of members prevents travel to the club. We continue to closely monitor the situation and the impact on members’ enjoyment of, and access to, competitions and events – we will endeavour to fair to all members at all times.
Is the Pro Shop open?
Yes. The House of Golf team – led by Brian Connor – is following all guidance provided by the Professional Golfers Association and Government policy.
Updated 27/11: Are golf lessons available?
The House of Golf team are following stringent guidelines in relation to tuition and club fitting. As the guidelines change frequently you will need to check with the team before booking or attending any lessons/fittings. Don’t forget to call in to see the team when you next play.
Updated 27/11: Can I use the clubhouse?
There are notices around the club and clubhouse providing guidance on safe use of the facilities – all members, guests and visitors to The Manchester Golf Club are requested to familiarise themselves with the guidance and to comply at all times.
Updated 27/11: Are bar and catering services available?
No, not at this point in time.
When bar and catering services are permitted by Government Guidelines food and drink will be served on selected days. You will see notices around the Clubhouse providing guidance on the safe use of the bar and catering services – it is essential that everyone complies with this guidance at all times. Please take time to read the notices before using the facilities. Opening hours will be reviewed on an ongoing basis in line with the level of demand from members and visitors, please refer to the Members COVID-19 FAQ page for updates.
What toilet facilities are available at the club?
Toilet facilities are available at the club although restrictions for safe use are in place. Please familiarise yourself with the notices and guidelines before using these facilities.
ARCHIVED: Can I retrieve any equipment from the clubhouse?
Yes, members can liaise with Brian Connor to gain access to your locker on one occasion from Thursday 14 May. In doing so please:
- Contact the Pro Shop well in advance of travelling to the club
- Collect your equipment from the Pro Shop shortly before your tee-time reservation – please remember to clean you equipment on collection
- Do not return any equipment to the clubhouse
The locker rooms will re-open as soon as safely possible.
AMENDED 27/11: Are the practise facilities open?
Yes, provided that members comply with our social distancing and practising guidelines (please click on the button below for full details), you are able to use the:
- Putting green
- Chipping greens
- The practice hill
Updated 27/11: When can I book tee times?
Please refer to the BRS booking system to see when times become available.
AMENDED 14/5: Can buggies be hired?
Yes, subject to course conditions. Members MUST use the Buggy Sanitising Station before using any buggy. On returning the buggy, members MUST remove all equipment and dispose of any rubbish.
AMENDED 13/5: Can I use my own buggy?
Yes, subject to course conditions and social distancing guidelines. Please also take care not to touch other buggies when using or accessing your own.
When will all members of staff return to work?
Members will appreciate the many challenges of financial planning and forecasting in extremely uncertain times for the economy. Your Council bring employees back to work as soon as needed and prudent to do so. We will continue to keep members informed through the regular Members Updates.
UPDATED 27/11: Can I play in a 3 or 4 ball with members outside my household?
Yes, subject to Government and England Golf guidelines which change from time to time. Player should check before playing that they can still play in any combination, provided that tee-times are booked in advance Please check Government local restrictions before travelling to the club.
Amended 24/7: What standard will the course be in?
Government and golf industry guidelines only permitted essential maintenance on the course during the lockdown period. Matt and his core team worked tirelessly throughout the period to protect and maintain the course and following the reinstatement of golf a comprehensive programme of works is underway.
AMENDED 5/6: Can I play with a guest?
Yes, we are delighted to welcome guests to Manchester Golf Club. With play now permitted in 2,3 and 4 fourballs, there is much less pressure on the timesheets and members are encouraged to bring guests to the club. Visitors are permitted to play on a restricted basis. All golfers must follow our Social Distancing Guidelines which are available via the link above.
How can I help?
The vast majority of members have provided incredible support to the club during this crisis. Members can also help by understanding that the club is currently restricted by Government Guidelines, Industry Guidelines, Health & Safety obligations, and financial constraints. The club is resolutely committed to members and will continue to act in their best long-term interests for the benefit of all.
Members are encouraged to show their appreciation to the club’s employees and associates – including the House of Golf team – for being so flexible and supportive during these challenging times.
How do I get an answer to a question other than those above?

Can I access the trolley store?
Yes, members can access to the trolley store from Thursday 14 May. In doing so please:
- Following social distancing rules at all time – including keeping at least 2 metres away from others
- Take care not to touch anything other than your own equipment
- Use the cleaning station to thorough clean your trolley on collection and return
Updated 24/7: Can I enter club competitions?
Yes, using the BRS tee-time system from your own devices (including laptop, tablet and phone). It is not possible to enter competitions using the club’s computer systems. A full competition calendar has been published on BRS.
AMENDED 24/7: Will there be any Wednesday competitions?
Updated 24/7: How do I pay for competitions?
As explained in the competition guidelines (please see https://bit.ly/mangc12), once the starting sheet for weekend competitions close (4pm on a Friday prior to Saturday competitions) players on the start sheet will be considered as having entered the competition, with the club automatically debiting £5 from each of those players’ accounts.
For Wednesday competitions, members are required to enter via the computer screen in the Pro Shop of Clubhouse entrance foyer before teeing off. Please remember to clean the computer touch screens using the materials provided.
AMENDED 24/7: When will qualifying competitions start?
Qualifying competitions for handicap purposes are now being played. These started following an initial period of assessment. Competition details are maintained on BRS.
Yes, following the successful trial of Wednesday Pro’s Comps, official club Wednesday competitions have been reintroduced and qualify for handicap purposes.
Will tee-times be restricted?
The priority has been to re-open the course as soon as possible at short notice. To be fair to fellow members, everyone should limit their tee-time bookings to one future casual game and a maximum of two competition bookings at any point in time.
The course is in superb condition and we are pleased to have received extremely positive feedback from members, visitors and guests.
AMENDED 13/5: Will I receive a refund for my locker rental?
The locker rooms will re-open as soon as possible and members will be able to use their lockers again. Unfortunately, we will not be refunding locker rentals and appreciate member support at this difficult time. We are taking care to make everything as safe as possible for everyone, including members and staff.
